A question that has been astonished media observers for some years. We are looking at the end of printed mass media. However the condemned live longer: publishing is back. Printed magazines will not disappear. They become more specific, more independent and will be located in a niche of experts.
Everything changed with the Internet. Printed media cannot offer news in real time, it is non-functional therefore it becomes less important. But regardless the publishing industry has been tempered by a mini renaissance in independent titles, that offer readers more emotional experiences. There is a power of magazines that appears through collecting, making a fetish and mystifying them.
With regard to these facts I take a closer look at different subcultures, living environments and presentations of printed magazines. Within an ethnographic and artistic research a typology of experiences and interpretations of magazines will be developed.
