But how can patients communicate appropriately about the nature of their pain when language barriers exist between them and their caretakers?

The goal of this research was to visualize physical pain and create a communication tool that can be used for diagnosis. Through interviews with experts, surveys, experiments and questionnaires different representations of pain were developed and subsequently validated in cooperation with headache patients and doctors of the University Hospital of Zurich.

A high degree of reliability supports the claim that visual representations of pain can serve as a communication tool in everyday medical practice. While this instrument offers a new approach to communication about pain, the possibilities are far from exhausted and can certainly be optimized and extended.
