The subject I’m investigating is the way fear and uncanny express themselves through space.

I’ll so focus on the figure of the haunted house, which is an archetypal space of uncanny.
First I’ll show how this archetype appeared during the XIXth century and how it was the catalyst of the fears and the new anxieties of that period.
Then I’ll show its transfer to cinema and all the composition and construction rules created in order to support the sensation of fear and and uncanny through set design.
I’ll focus on the use of what we could call the threshold objects.
In the last part of my thesis I’ll talk about the apparition of new haunted spaces and I’ll question their new stakes.
