Leni Riefenstahl, the favourite movie director of the nazi regime, realized in 1934 “Triumph des Willens”, a movie dedicated to the annual Congress of the Party in Nuremberg.
Hitler himself promoted the realization of the movie, to export to the mass a glorious reproduction of the nazi terror.
In 1937, by request of the MoMA of New York, Siegfried Kracauer developed a method of cinematographic analysis of propaganda as a weapon, to understand the real threat of the documentaries produced by the nazi regime.
I applied this method to a sequence of “Triumph des Willens”: I discomposed every scene, reconstructed and reproduced it in today’s context, in the same place where the movie was made eighty years ago.
The staging of the nazi universe - made of impressive architecture, of mass movements and warmonger monologues – disappears, revealing the ephemeral and false side of a congress which was purposely built to export the reproduction to the mass.
