This research looks at the work of the Swiss photographer René Groebli with a focus on his experimentation with color photography for commercial clients in the 1960s and 1970s. The analysis of Groebli’s photo books Variation (1965) and Variation 2 (1971) serves as a base for understanding his photographic approach and way of experimenting with color photography. Especially the use of color photography in the commercial sector as a method is questioned. Insights into other photographer’s work, historical examples as well as contemporary ones, create a versatile mix of the possibilities of color photography.
An interview with René Groebli himself will give more insight into his work and gives the opportunity to gain further information on him. Questions that come up are: What knowledge can we gain from Groebli's work? What can be applied to today's commercial photography? What influence did the introduction of color photography have for the commercial photography?
