Living National Treasure, known as Ningen-Kokuho in Japan, is a common name for the craftsmen who is certified as a person who embodies the craftsmanship that is selected by the country as an important intangible cultural property in Japan. The certificate does not only cerebrate one’s skill, but it also enables the country to protect the craftsmanship from their crisis of survival. My research focuses 3 different Living National Treasures and their families those who are living with their craftsmanships for generations. Following stories surrounding their craftsmanship I realised these traditional craftsmanships often struggle in the constrains and the burdens in their craftsmanship when they encounter a crisis. This makes me ask myself what design can do for them even though their traditions seem quite untouchable from the out side of their worlds.TutorsAnniina Koivu / Brynjar Sigurðarson
