With opening the questions on the daily basis experience from the ordinary space, this thesis aims to focus on the visual perception of tridimensional space and a two-dimensional image. How do we perceive the ordinary space by optical senses? How do the ways of seeing and perceiving the surroundings bring the different result on treating an image? What do the other factors occur on creating the spatial image?
Creating a vanishing point is just one of the ways to depict the world. There is no absolute or objective way of representing the real space. The survey conducted in this work points out that three different factors affect image creations: cultural difference, historical time, and tool development for creating an image. Based on the analysis of an image survey, it presents the diverse ways of representing our surroundings. It shows how images reflect the person’s understanding of the world and the flexibility of the human mind regarding creating the images.
The purpose of the first practical experiment was to find the primary components of the ordinary place to regard it as space. Space is consisting of specific volume and specific size, which are measurable and calculable. However, the size and the volume become relative to each other when it comes to an image. To prove that, camera pictured the underlying object elements: a plate and balls without any color except white and black. The intention behind the simple forms is to let viewers focus on the act of perceiving them. Additionally, several parameters were tested until the decisive points were found, such as distance, size of balls, different backgrounds, light, and angle of viewpoints.
After finding the main parameters, the images were produced by the strict system under the matrix by creating the three-dimensional figures using a rendering software. Image series shows a different impact on our perception by not only the parameters but also the tool that has been used; Cinema 4d. The result of images contrasts with the images produced by the photograph that had been conducted at the beginning of the study. By ordering the image series, it guides viewers to look at the little shifts of images either by the parameters or different tools. From the various reorganizations of image series, objective and subjective viewpoints were suggested to observe in detail.
This thesis contains the various levels of points in regard to our perception matters. Theoretical and practical research put strength on how human's perception is affected by complex variants. At the same time, it compares between three-dimensional experience on the ground and the optical experiences on the surface. By doing so, the project explores the power of image where the limit of the dimension becomes the strength aspect.
